It's Digital Literacy Month!

9 Oct 2026 12:31 PM | Emma Schreiner (Administrator)

October is Digital Literacy Month, a great opportunity to recognize the important role digital skills play in adult education and everyday life.

Today, so many essential tasks require digital access, from applying for jobs and accessing healthcare to communicating with schools, managing finances, and completing government forms. For adult learners, developing these skills can open doors to further opportunities.

However, access to technology is only part of the picture. Many adults face barriers such as limited internet access, a lack of suitable devices, language differences, or limited experience using computers and smartphones. Even seemingly simple tasks, like creating an email account, navigating a website, or remembering a password, can be significant challenges.

Adult education programs play a vital role in helping learners overcome these barriers. By integrating digital literacy into English language instruction, basic skills education, and workplace preparation, educators can help learners build practical skills they can use immediately in their daily lives.

Digital literacy is not simply about learning to use technology. It is about ensuring that everyone has the skills, resources, and confidence to participate fully in an increasingly digital world.

This Digital Literacy Month, let's continue working toward a future where every adult learner has the opportunity to connect, learn, and thrive.

Here are some free resources that may help learners:

  • Northstar Digital Literacy - Offers free online assessments and learning resources to help learners develop foundational computer skills, use email, and prepare for job searches.

  • GCFGlobal - Provides free, self-paced tutorials on computer basics, internet use, email, online safety, and Microsoft Office.

  • Google Applied Digital Skills  - Offers free, video-based lessons that connect digital skills with practical tasks, including job searching, budgeting, and project planning.
